If you are thinking about moving to Los Angeles alone, you are not truly alone.
There are thousands of Los Angeles transplants and immigrants who have done the same. Some have gone back home and many more have stayed and prospered.
The key to moving to Los Angeles alone is to practice before you make your move. Los Angeles is not a city to jump into for first time transplants. Start by moving to a nearby city and getting practice. This way you will develop skills you need to survive.
When I made my first move to a city alone, I went to college. I learned how to look for jobs and how to find things I needed by using student resources.
The next time I move to a city alone, I moved to Houston. I learned how to find shared housing, book night stays at temporary hostels and use the internet to ask questions and meet other solo travelers.
The next time I moved to a city alone, I moved to Dallas. I used the skills I learned in Houston to find a temporary job and find a place to stay.
Then I moved back home and learned how to develop skills to support myself. I became a waitress. I have been waitressing ever since when I need to.
Now that I live in Los Angeles, I have learned the hustle of surviving with temporary income only. I am registered with more than 25 temp agencies that cater to background acting, administrative work, brand ambassador work and catering services (waitressing). I used the same skills I learned in Houston to find temporary housing, connect with others and navigate the city alone, without a car. I now have my own studio apartment and I have created a nice life for myself, but just like any person’s life, it’s not always easy. I have to stay on top of my game, constantly finding new jobs and trying new ways to support myself. Most people in Los Angeles have more than one job. Can you handle living like that?
If you have never moved to a new city and you have not proven to yourself that you have a hustler mentality, Los Angeles is not the city to practice in.
Los Angeles is a progressive place with lots to do and experience but it is not going anywhere. Get your practice in. Learn how to support yourself in multiple ways. Learn how to be alone because when you get here there will be no one you can trust and you must be okay with that or you will be destroyed emotionally.
