If you are going to move to a new city you are going to need money. That’s a given but many people don’t think about the fact that there are ways to save money that aren’t on the radar of the average person.
Here are my top suggestions for saving money to relocate to a new city.
1. Minimize your lifestyle.
Get a smaller apartment. Find a roommate. Sell your car. Move back home with your parents. Whatever it is that will reduce the amount of bills you have to pay regularly, then do it. It will be tough to keep up with the appearance of success while you are trying to transition so let it go and think of it as a new beginning where you are throwing off your old shell and finding a newer one.
2. Sell everything you own.
If you are moving to a new city to start over in life, don’t bring the things that will remind you of your old one. You’ll cry. You’ll whine. You’ll miss your favorite shirt but you’ll buy new ones to create new memories with. Let go of the things that are attached to the past and make room for the new.
3. Get a second job.
Find a job that is part-time and doesn’t require much thought. Save every penny from this job as your Moving To LA fund.
4. Give up a habit.
Do you smoke? Quit smoking and save the money for your relocation. Do you shop? No new shoes for you until after you make your move. Do you drink? Put down the bottle. Just giving up ONE financially destructive habit will allow you to make big leaps in your savings.
5. Create a product to sell.
Now is the time to try that idea you’ve been wanting to try in order to make money. No, I’m not talking about that tier level scheme, I’m talking about creating something with your hands and selling it for a profit. If you can bake, make baked goods. If you can knit, sell scarves. Figure out what you can do with your hands, even down to lawn work and make it work for you.
